What is CBT?
Cognitive
Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is the name given to form of
psychological therapy which focuses on changing thoughts, behaviours,
and emotions to assist people in overcoming psychological difficulties, as well
as helping people manage physical conditions such as those that produce chronic
pain.
While
other forms of psychotherapy often focus on past events, CBT tends to focus
primarily on changing things in the ?ere and now? Although CBT therapists
will usually study a person? history in order to understand the causes of
their current problems, CBT therapy for most problems centres
around present problems.
It
is also different from some other forms of psychotherapy in that it does not
simply involve talking about issues. Rather, clients in CBT therapy are taught
specific techniques to manage their problems. Hence it is ultimately the person
receiving therapy that learns to overcome their problems, rather than the
therapist ?ixing them.
Clients
are also given ?omework between sessions which involves practicing techniques
learnt during sessions.
